After successfully assassinating Eurole, the mad king of the Salasar Isles, the party needed to escape the crumbling castle and a creepy voice that kept poking about in their heads. After swimming through a hall full of explosive floating corpses, dealing with some Chuuls over a door-floor, and Tarzaning across a huge spike pit, the party found a magic pool of seawater that just reeked of weird juju. Kaeton adjusted the magic in the pool and the party used it to port out of the castle. However, on the way, the party astral-projected to a seaside shack where a lady shadar-kai, her crippled manservant, and her toddler son dwelt. The party sketched about, finding some odd gifts and congratulations sent to the woman from folks way above her station. Weird.
Eventually the party drifted back to their bodies, which were waiting with Kaeton on the Revenant. On the way back, the ship was assaulted again by the booming voice — a massive kraken that called itself The Promise. The party and the ship barely survived the encounter, but still managed to defeat the kraken. Quoth the fallen Promise : “A single gale relents, but the storm still rises. My prophesy cannot be unspoken. The Promise will not be broken. The Reach extends. The grip tightens.”
As soon as the battered Revenant reaches the docks, Zan-kyri manages to offend a minotaur dockworker named Bruhn. Wren had no interest in a tussle with a minotaur and his stevedore bros, so he slipped away while the party was engaged. The situation was thankfully smoothed over, and Bruhn decided to join the party and get in on some of that lucrative ‘work for the empire’ business. They were then able to move on to the next dockside weirdo, a dead-eyed half-orc with a smooth and somewhat blackened skull. He seemed intrigued that the party was able to dispatch the Promise, and told them that the Reach wished to speak with them. He gave them a pearl to contact him and said he would be waiting further up the river.
The party then traveled to the diplomats’ inn, Second Home, for a much needed rest. There they spotted two disturbances, a group of ruffians huddled around the cellar entrance and four cloaked figures crowded around the fire. The party first made their way through the cellar crowd and down to the supposed ‘wine tasting,’ which was in fact, a murky gathering where infatuated officials (including Zan-kyri and Bruhn) fawned over Lyta Dee, a diplomat representing the Abyssal Delegation of Fife. She gave Bruhn a snake amulet to contact her in case they wished to help her forge an alliance between Fife and Caith. Also, she alluded to another faction of demons, or at least demon cultists, who had taken over O’rland and had since cause the Abyssal Delegation some headaches. These cultists sounded a lot like the folks backing Eurole, the Promise, and the strange orc at the docks.
Upstairs, the party met with the weirdos by the fire, the vampiress Allegra and the quiet ghoul Mr. Adagio, who represented an undead delegation in the Frozen North of Antenora. They wanted an alliance as well, and they wanted the party to take care of their competition, Lyta Dee and the mysterious delegate from O’rland.
To forestall picking sides yet, the party went for the mutual enemy of both parties, the representative of the cultist forces that held O’rland, the Reach. Tracking him to the mouth of the river, they found a mindflayer feasting on the skull of one of the Shit-Kickers that the party had dispatched days ago. Though the Reach offered a place for the party as the new Promise, they decided to take care of him before he could cause any more trouble. They found that killing a mind flayer was not a simple task, but killed him they did.
The party got their reward from both parties which included a fair amount of gold and a castle in Fife for Bruhn. They then met with Lady Morgan and proposed she forge an alliance between Caith and Fife and begin the invasion of O’rland. Outside the meeting with the diplomats, they told Lady Morgan that this alliance would not only bring forces from Fife to help invade O’rland, but it would distract the Abyssal Delegation while the party infiltrated Fife. The undead delegation from Antenora will be Caith’s true allies, and the vampiress Allegra will join the party as a representative.
Will the party help the beleaguered resistance? Or are they just in it for the Bruhn’s castle, where said resistance is currently sheltered? Only time will tell, dear readers.
